The Archaeological Civic Museum: Etruscan Splendors
The Archaeological Civic Museum is a hidden gem that is sure to surprise. Located at 24 Via Roma in the Gabrielli Palace (16th century), it houses numerous artifacts from the municipal area, primarily from Etruscan necropolises dating from the 9th to the 1st century BC.
Of particular interest are the canopic urns, the painted ceramics, both Etruscan and Attic imports, and the exceptional stone ossuaries. In the basement, there is a striking life-size reconstruction, using a unique technique in Italy, of the Painted Tomb of the Quadriga Infernale, discovered in 2003 in the Pianacce necropolis.
The visit to the Tomb of the Quadriga Infernale takes place every Saturday of the year, with bookings made at the Archaeological Civic Museum. From June to September, the visits are at 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM, and during other periods, at 3:00 PM. On other days, a full-scale replica of the tomb and its contents is visible in the museum rooms. Below are the museum’s opening hours.
